The research team is working with an existing (Colorado) High Plains Community Advisory Council to create an expanded Joint Planning Committee, which will include additional community leaders, health care providers, and other stakeholders of this rural region. The partners will design messages and delivery approaches likely to encourage residents to seek colorectal cancer screening. In a pilot study in one community, messages (in print, television, radio, and poster form) will be tested in focus groups and then modified for the entire High Plains area. A survey will be conducted (500 people from a control area and 500 from the intervention area) by phone before and after the message dissemination to assess the public’s exposure to the messages, comprehension of them, attitude and behavior changes that may be attributable to the messages, understanding of risk of colorectal cancer, and current screening status.
