Over half of Rocky Mountain spotted fever infections are reported from the south-Atlantic and south-central regions of the United States (North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Oklahoma). In 2002, the states reporting the highest incidence (number of cases per 1 million people) were North Carolina, South Carolina, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri.
Although Rocky Mountain spotted fever was first identified in the Rocky Mountain states, less than 1.5% of the U.S. cases were reported from that area during 2002.
