Drowning Increases in the U.S.

Making swimming lessons more accessible can save lives

Over 4,500 people drowned each year in the United States from 2020–2022. This is about 500 more drowning deaths each year compared to 2019. Basic swimming and water safety skills training can reduce drowning risk, but over half of U.S. adults have never taken a swimming lesson. Read the latest issue of Vital Signs to learn about the steps you can take to help prevent drowning deaths.
