In 2007, a total of 5,400 contracting companies reported employment at noncoal mines to MSHA, or 64.3% of all independent contracting companies. This 2007 mining fact sheet covers statistics of general interest relating to surface and underground noncoal mining operations, workers, fatalities, nonfatal lost-time injuries, and occupational illness.
