State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System (SUDORS)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) maintains the State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System (SUDORS) to provide comprehensive information on drug overdose deaths. Funded jurisdictions collect and abstract data for drug overdose deaths of unintentional and undetermined intent drug overdose deaths from death certificates and medical examiner/coroner reports (including scene findings, autopsy reports, and full postmortem toxicology findings) for entry into a web-based CDC platform that is shared with the National Violent Death Reporting System.

Overdose Data to Action
  • Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) supports jurisdictions in collecting high quality, comprehensive, and timely data on nonfatal and fatal overdoses and in using those data to inform prevention and response efforts. OD2A focuses on understanding and tracking the complex and changing nature of the drug overdose epidemic and highlights the need for seamless integration of data into prevention strategies.
SUDORS
  • OD2A uses data from SUDORS to provide comprehensive information on drug overdose deaths. Funded jurisdictions collect and abstract data for drug overdose deaths of unintentional and undetermined intent from death certificates and medical examiner and coroner reports (including scene findings, autopsy reports, and full postmortem toxicology findings) for entry into a web-based CDC platform that is shared with the National Violent Death Reporting System.
  • SUDORS Fact Sheet provides detailed information on SUDORS goals, data sources, unique data attributes and how SUDORS data can be used for action in a format that can be readily shared.
  • SUDORS Data Dashboard presents information on rates of overdose deaths by drug or drug class; percentages of overdose deaths involving select opioids and stimulants, opioids and stimulants (alone or in combination) involved in overdose deaths; number of overdose deaths by month, percentage and rates of overdose deaths by sex, age, and race/ethnicity; percentage of deaths with select circumstances and potential opportunities for intervention. An accompanying Data Brief summarizes the data included on the dashboard and presents key takeaways.
  • Drug Overdose Publications provides links to journal articles, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Reports articles, and Data Briefs that use SUDORS data.
