Service Fellowship in the Division of Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys

Position and organization

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), located in Hyattsville, Maryland, is seeking a Service Fellow to work in the Division of Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (DHANES). As the country’s principal health statistics agency, NCHS’ mission is to provide statistical information to guide actions and policies to improve the health of the American people. DHANES conducts the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), one of the main sources of data on the health and nutritional status of the civilian noninstitutionalized U.S. population. NHANES is a nationally representative survey of approximately 5,000 participants per year. The survey is unique in that it collects data through interviews and examinations. Fellowship overview

Under the supervision of the Planning Branch Chief, the Service Fellow will serve as the questionnaire coordinator, responsible for various questionnaire components of NHANES. Primary responsibilities will include taking a leadership role in a systematic review of multiple NHANES questionnaires by participating on an intra-Division ad hoc team that will make recommendations to the Branch Chief. Additionally, the Service Fellow may be assigned to work on individual components of the survey by working with the collaborator who is funding the component, reviewing data quality, analyzing survey data, providing technical consultation and advice to data users and colleagues, and conducting analyses with NHANES data.

Qualifications

This fellowship is open to all citizens of the United States and legal permanent residents with a work authorization. Applicants are responsible for obtaining the necessary work authorization. Applicants must have successfully completed a graduate degree in survey methodology, sociology, epidemiology, health sciences, or a related field. The work requires a strong background in questionnaire design and evaluation and a thorough understanding of survey methodology; experience analyzing survey data (preferable with SAS); the ability to work as a team player; attention to detail; multitasking skills; and strong speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills.

Terms of appointment

The successful candidate will be offered an initial 36-month appointment, with the potential for an extension. A starting date will be determined by mutual agreement. An initial salary range of $77,490–$119,794 will be offered based on education and experience. Salary increases will be commensurate with performance. Federal benefits, such as annual and sick leave, Thrift Savings 401(k)-equivalent, and health and life insurance apply. A flexible work schedule or telework may be offered at the discretion of the supervisor. The Fellow will have the option of free onsite parking or a public-transportation subsidy. The local subway station is within walking distance.
