LOCS Message
In November 2024, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) updated the Federal Select Agent Program (FSAP) website. CDC and USDA published a new resource webpage with information for clinical/diagnostic laboratories, healthcare facilities, and other entities not registered with the FSAP. This webpage summarizes key information for those who are not registered with the FSAP but may encounter select agents or toxins during the course of their daily work. The website includes the following topics:
- Diagnostic Specimen Exemption
- Medical Waste Exclusion
- Reporting Requirements
- Tier 1 Select Agents and Toxins
- Non-Tier 1 Select Agents and Toxins
- Select Agent and Toxin Exclusions
- Reporting the Identification of a Select Agent or Toxin
- Additional Resources
The FAQ: Outbreaks webpage was also updated to include information about mpox diagnostics, applicability of select agent and toxin regulations to mpox specimens, and wastewater surveillance for mpox nucleic acids.
We encourage you to share this message widely with your network(s).
