NIOSH Nominates Nine Articles for Scientific Excellence Award

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) nominated nine outstanding articles by NIOSH researchers for a prestigious scientific award for 2010. NIOSH also submitted one nomination for the award’s lifetime scientific achievement category.
The 2010 Charles C. Shepard Science Award is sponsored by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).NIOSH, which was created under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, is a part of CDC.The award honors excellence in science at CDC as represented in peer-reviewed articles published during the year 2009; the winners will be announced later this year.
“These nominations reflect NIOSH’s leadership in advancing and applying new scientific knowledge to prevent work-related injury and illness,” said NIOSH Director John Howard, M.D. “They represent key contributions to the innovative, ingenious science on which the health and safety strategies of the 21st Century are being built.”
The studies that NIOSH nominated were published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The nine papers were nominated in the categories of Laboratory and Methods; Assessment and Epidemiology; and Prevention and Control. NIOSH also nominated Hongwei Hsiao, Ph.D., chief of the protective technology branch in NIOSH’s Division of Safety Research, for the award’s lifetime scientific achievement category.
