The purpose of this conference is to focus attention across disciplines on practical ways to better prevent local and systemic injury and disease caused by exposing skin to chemicals. To accomplish this, plenary speakers and workshops will focus on each of six themes: 1) Irritants and Wet Work, 2) Allergens, 3) Systemic Toxics, 4) Quantitative Risk Assessment, 5) Process-Based, Qualitative Risk Assessment and 6) Exposure Reduction. In addition, Short Courses, vendor seminars and vendor exhibits will be offered.

It is anticipated that posters will be presented by researchers and practitioners who are occupational and environmental hygienists, nurses, physicians, engineers, laboratory scientists, policy-makers and others in relevant fields. Every attendee is invited to submit one or more abstracts for posters that will be displayed throughout the Conference. Authors may introduce their posters briefly during Plenary Sessions and will answer questions during Poster Sessions.

Posters may present information on a wide range of issues including planned research, research results, organizational activities, field experience, current policies/recommendations or proposed policies. Only abstracts 200 words to four single-spaced pages in length (including necessary figures and tables) will be accepted for review for clarity, relevance and absence of inappropriate commercialism. Abstracts should be structured following: Background (including objective), Methods, Results and Conclusions.

Abstracts may be submitted through this website (click here) until 31 March 2005, although those submitted early will receive first consideration in case the number of posters offered exceeds the available display space. Each abstract’s Corresponding Author will be notified of acceptance by E-mail by late April 2005.

Accepted abstracts will be posted on a NIOSH website prior to and following the conference. Authors will be encouraged to submit updated abstracts, including lengthening them to “extended abstracts” (up to four single-spaced pages), prior to their publication in final form on a “permanent” NIOSH website about 1 October 2005. This is to encourage the sharing of as much relevant information as possible. Material posted on any NIOSH website carries no copyright, and the authors may publish articles containing the same information elsewhere.
