Project Description

Short Summary

To better coordinate its efforts, NIOSH has organized its portfolio into specific programmatic categories that can be readily communicated, strategically governed and evaluated. The NIOSH Program Portfolio has been organized into eight (8) NORA Sector Programs that represent industrial sectors, and twenty-four (24) Cross-Sector Programs. This project addresses the needs and activities associated with the coordination of the Manufacturing Sector Program. The activities conducted under this project include: holding a Manufacturing Sector Town Hall meeting; developing Manufacturing Sector web pages for the Program Portfolio website; holding Manufacturing Sector workshops at the NORA Symposia; organizing the Manufacturing Sector Research Council; and working with the Manufacturing Sector Research Council to develop and implement a national research agenda for the Manufacturing Sector.

Description

To better coordinate its research efforts, NIOSH has organized its portfolio into specific programmatic categories that can be readily communicated, strategically governed and evaluated. The NIOSH Program Portfolio has been organized into eight (8) NORA Sector Programs that represent industrial sectors, and twenty-four (24) Cross-Sector Programs organized around health outcomes, statutory programs and global efforts. This project addresses the needs and activities associated with the coordination of the Manufacturing Sector Program. Programmatic activities to develop the Manufacturing Sector Portfolio under this project have included a Manufacturing Sector Town Hall meeting held to gather stakeholder input, development of Manufacturing Sector web pages for the Program Portfolio website, and the Manufacturing Sector held a workshop at the NORA Symposium in 2006 and 2008. The program is currently working with the Manufacturing Sector Council to develop goals and objectives for the strategic plan. In this effort, the Council has face-to-face meetings twice per year. Numerous email, conference calls and webinar meetings have also been utilized to develop the Manufacturing Sector Strategic Plan. The project will post on the web site a draft strategic plan/research agenda, for the Manufacturing Sector in late FY2009, and proceed to work on refining the agenda and developing an implementation plan. The project will continue to focus on the implementation of the Manufacturing Sector Strategic Plan.

Objectives

The goal of this project is to 1) assure that the NORA Manufacturing Sector Council is engaged to implement the National Manufacturing Agenda developed under the auspices of NORA; 2) assure that the NIOSH/NORA Manufacturing Program fulfills its mandate to respond to occupational safety and health issues through research and assistance to prevent work-related illness, injury, fatalities, hazards, and exposures; (3) apply research to the workplace and promote the outcomes of putting research applications into practice (r2p); and (4) to build and strengthen relationships with manufacturing stakeholders via outreach to increase their knowledge of NIOSH and NORA to recruit their participation in NORA . The purpose is to generate intermediate and end outcomes in support of the National Manufacturing Agenda goals.

Mission Relevance

NIOSH conducts a vast range of efforts in the area of research, guidance, information, and service. To better coordinate these efforts, NIOSH has organized its portfolio into specific programmatic categories that can be readily communicated, strategically governed and evaluated. The NIOSH Program Portfolio focuses on relevance, quality and impact. NIOSH programmatic and support structures provide a foundation for NIOSH staff to carry out its mission to provide national and world leadership to prevent work-related illnesses and injuries. The NIOSH Program Portfolio has been organized into eight (8) NORA Sector Programs that represent industrial sectors, one Sub-Sector Program (Oil & Gas), and twenty-four (24) Cross-Sector Programs organized around health outcomes, statutory programs and global efforts. This project addresses the needs and activities associated with the coordination of the Manufacturing Sector Program represented by those industrial activities identified in the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes beginning with sequences 31, 32, or 33. There are 21 two-digit Sub-Sectors in the sector. The Manufacturing Sector Council has developed 10 strategic goals and is in the process of identifying intermediate goals for the sector. This project addresses all ten of the strategic goals.
