The underlying purpose of this workshop is to initiate discussions
concerning the current state of scientific knowledge regarding transmission
of infectious agents and respiratory protection; discuss strategies
for improving the quality of respiratory protection; and identify
critical research needs that will fill current knowledge gaps. These
reportsare provided to guide and encourage open discussion and
do not represent a comprehensive list of the issues. Participant input
was encouraged to identify the research needs and gaps that will be evaluated
by CDC at the conclusion of this workshop.

Summary Reports from Breakout Sessions
Each group held three one-hour breakout sessions to address the overarching focus issues of the five plenary sessions. The participants were asked to provide input on the current science and knowledge, existing data gaps and future research needs in respiratory protection for airborne infectious agents (AIAs). A feedback box was available for participants to submit written comments on policy, budget and other non-scientific issues. Questions posed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and comments by the participants in each session are outlined in the reports below.
