Overview of State Program

The Michigan Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence (MCADSV) was incorporated as a private nonprofit corporation in 1978 and represents over 70 domestic and sexual violence organizations throughout the state. MCADSV's mission is to eliminate domestic violence and sexual assault in Michigan. Coalition goals are to ensure the delivery of quality services to domestic and sexual violence victims while building partnerships for the prevention of victimization and perpetration of violence.

MCADSV uses a social change model that promotes equality through individual, institutional, and cultural changes. Program activities include providing leadership, technical assistance, training, and resources throughout the state to benefit domestic and sexual violence survivors and their communities.

The Michigan Domestic Violence Prevention Enhancement and Leadership Through Alliances (DELTA) program is a collaboration between MCADSV and four diverse local communities representing urban, rural, and suburban sections of the state. The DELTA Coordinator and other partners have provided ongoing technical assistance tailored to the needs of individual communities through customized trainings, attendance at committee meetings and community events, the creation of Michigan DELTA listserv, and participation in group conference calls. All efforts are designed to complement those identified in the MCADSV "Vision for Prevention" document released in 2003. MCADSV continues to build capacity for prevention-focused activities at the state and local level with an emphasis on activities that prevent first-time perpetration and victimization of domestic violence.

State Future Directions

MCADSV will continue to increase the prevention capacity of Coordinated Community Response Teams (CCRs), their local fiscal agents, and state and local stakeholders across Michigan. Over the next year, MCADSV will complete the development of a state-wide prevention plan in partnership with a steering committee that exists to promote healthy, respectful relationships at the individual, family, community, and society levels. MCADSV is working closely with the Michigan Department of Community Health and the Rape Prevention and Education Program on this initiative. The coalition continues to contract with an Empowerment Evaluator to advise and assist with this task.

Ongoing training and technical assistance will include continued discussions of public health principles, including multi-level prevention approaches, and community organizing. Based on the identified needs of the four local communities, training on how to work with men, boys, and faith communities will continue. MCADSV will also provide technical assistance on sustainability, grant writing, strategic planning, and other critical capacity building areas through community-based technical assistance and face-to-face training opportunities to better address the needs of the diverse communities funded in Michigan.
