Activities Proposed for FY 05

Antimicrobial Resistance, Food Safety, Hepatitis Prevention and Control, Influenza Surveillance and Response, National Electronic Disease Surveillance System, West Nile Virus, General Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity, and Human Prion Disease Surveillance


Key Performance Indicators

Antimicrobial Resistance
  • Promotion of Appropriate Antibiotic Use in the Community.
Food Safety
  • Progress towards molecular identification of foodborne parasites and viruses.
Hepatitis Prevention and Control
  • DOH and its partners will collaborate to evaluate the effectiveness of the program.
Influenza Surveillance and Response
  • Success will be measured through the correct identification of isolates.
National Electronic Disease Surveillance System
  • Continue participation in national associations' user groups.
  • Effectiveness will be measured through the enhancement of notifiable condition surveillance and disease control capabilities.
West Nile Virus
  • Provide WNV testing for 700 or more dead birds throughout the state.
  • Obtain WNV test results for symptomatic horses from practitioners and veterinary laboratories while supporting testing for horses that show neurological signs that would not otherwise be tested.
  • Identify WNV vector mosquito species from 1,000 mosquito pools and test 100 pools for WNV and other arboviruses.
General Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity
  • Timely reports to the CDC's CJD surveillance unit.
Human Prion Disease Surveillance
  • Identify other resources and methods to enhance surveillance of prion disease.
  • Facilitate timely review of death certificates for possible, probable, and confirmed cases of CJD or other prion disease.
