'Symptoms' SYMPTOMS
Gloria - Survivor of Hantavirus Disease SURVIVOR - GLORIA:
When I first started getting sick I guess I just felt like I was just completely tired out. I started out just being exhausted. And then all of a sudden it kind of switched to flu symptoms. And I went to bed for about three days. And then it started in my lungs. And I couldn't breathe.
Man with thermometer NARRATOR:
The two universal symptoms that were seen in every patient were fever and...
Man rubbing muscles, holding stomach, coughing ...muscle aches. Theses were severe involving the large muscle group... the thighs, the hips, the back, sometimes the shoulder. And then about half the patients have abdominal problems... nausea and vomiting and abdominal pain. Some patients will have cough and shortness of breath early on and some may go for a week or ten days before they get the cough and the shortness of breath.
Gloria SURVIVOR - GLORIA:
I just felt like I was being suffocated that somebody was tightening a band over my chest and a pillow over my face so I couldn't breathe.
