NHANES (1999-2004) Linked Mortality Restricted-use Files

 

Data File Description

The NHANES Linked Mortality Restricted-use Files provide mortality follow-up data from the date of NHANES survey participation (1999-2004) through December 31, 2006. Mortality ascertainment is based primarily upon the results from a probabilistic match between NHANES and NDI death certificate records. The NHANES Linked Mortality Restricted-use data contains information on NHANES participant eligibility status, vital status, date of death, age at death, and underlying and contributing causes of death. Additional death certificate data are available by special request [PDF - 125 KB]. The NHANES Linked Mortality Restricted-use data files do not contain perturbed data.

 

Data Availability

Due to confidentiality requirements, the NHANES (1999-2004) Linked Mortality Restricted-use data are accessible only through the NCHS Research Data Center (RDC)). Approved researchers will be able to analyze data from the NHANES (1999-2004) Restricted-use Linked Mortality Files in the RDC. All interested researchers must submit a research proposal to the RDC requesting to access the "2009 NHANES (1999-2004) Restricted-use LMF". Special request variables [PDF - 125 KB], available separately, must be requested specifically, with additional justification, in the RDC proposal. Researchers will not be allowed to access variables from the NHANES (1999-2004) Public-use Linked Mortality Files in the RDC.

Data File Technical Characteristics

Since 1999, the NHANES survey data is released in two-year increments. The following list provides the number of file records per survey:

• NHANES 2001-2002: 11,039
• NHANES 2003-2004: 10,122
