QuickStats: Breast Cancer Death Rates Among Women Aged 45--64 Years,* by Race --- United States, 1990--2007

The figure shows breast cancer death rates among women aged 45-64 years, by race in the United States from 1990-2007. In 2007, breast cancer was the second leading cause of cancer death for white women aged 45-64 years and the leading cause
of cancer death for black women aged 45-64 years. From 1990 to 2007, the breast cancer death rate in this age group declined by 41% for white women and 24% for black women, increasing the disparity between the two groups. In 2007, the breast cancer death rate for women aged 45-64 years was 60% higher for black women than white women (56.8 and 35.6 deaths per 100,000, respectively).

* Rates per 100,000 women aged 45--64 years for whom breast cancer was the underlying cause of death (based on International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision [ICD-9] codes 174--175 for 1990--1998 and ICD-10 code C50 for 1999--2007).
