Injury Center Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs)

CE10-006 - Prevention of Suicidal Behavior through the Enhancement of Connectedness

Initial Fiscal Year: 2010
Program: ERPO
FOA Number: CE10-006
FOA Title: Prevention of Suicidal Behavior through the Enhancement of Connectedness

Purpose

The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control of CDC within HHS is committed to achieving the health promotion and disease prevention objectives of "Healthy People 2010" and to measuring program performance as stipulated by the Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA). This FOA addresses “Healthy People 2010” priority area(s) of injury and violence prevention and is in alignment with NCIPC performance goal(s) to conduct a targeted program of research to reduce injury-related death and disability. For more information, see HealthyPeople.gov.

The purpose of this announcement is to target one or more modifiable risk factors for suicidal behavior with a primary prevention strategy that is designed to enhance connectedness and to rigorously assess the efficacy or effectiveness of that strategy. Enhancement of connectedness among individuals, families, and communities was identified as one of the aims in the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (U.S. Public Health Service, 2001). As connectedness has direct relevance for primary prevention, the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control of CDC within HHS has adopted the strategic direction of building and strengthening connectedness within and among individuals, families, and communities to guide research and programmatic efforts to prevent suicidal behavior: Promoting Individual, Family, and Community Connectedness to Prevent Suicidal Behavior [PDF 506 KB].
