Tobacco Use Fact Sheets

For the United States overall and for select states, large urban school districts, territories, and tribal governments, these fact sheets present information about the percentages of youth who engage in certain risk behaviors, along with the status of school health policies and programs designed to address those behaviors.

This fact sheet combines results from the 2011 national Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and 2006 School Health Policies and Programs Study (SHPPS) to

  • Identify the percentage of high school students who smoke cigarettes and who use other tobacco products including smokeless tobacco
  • Describe characteristics of health education, family and community involvement, and the school environment among U.S. high schools that may help to address the problem

These fact sheets combine results from the 2011 state, territorial, district, and tribal government YRBS and 2012 state, territorial, district, and tribal government School Health Profiles surveys to

  • Identify the percentage of high school students who smoke cigarettes and who use other tobacco products including smokeless tobacco
  • Describe state and local characteristics of health education, partnerships with the community, and the school environment among middle and high schools that may help address the problem

*States, large urban school districts, territories, and tribal governments listed above had weighted data for both the 2011 YRBS and 2012 Profiles. This means that for YRBS, the site achieved at least a 60% overall response rate. For Profiles, the site achieved at least a 70% school response rate. With weighted data, it is possible to say, for example, "X% of high school students in our state smoked cigarettes during the past month and X% of middle schools and high schools in our state taught tobacco use prevention education."
