Physical Activity
Wisconsin is seeking to increase the percentage of schools
that teach about all of the following in a required course:
- Physical, psychological, or social benefits of physical activity.
- Health-related fitness (i.e., cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and body composition).
- Phases of a workout (i.e., warm-up, workout, cool down).
- How much physical activity is enough (i.e., determining frequency, intensity, time, and type of physical activity).
- Developing an individualized physical activity plan.
- Monitoring progress toward reaching goals in an individualized physical activity plan.
- Overcoming barriers to physical activity.
- Decreasing sedentary activities such as television viewing.
- Opportunities for physical activity in the community.
- Preventing injury during physical activity.
- Weather-related safety (e.g., avoiding heat stroke, hypothermia, and sunburn while physically active).
- Dangers of using performance-enhancing drugs such as steroids.
Activities
- Conduct the Best Practices in Physical Activity and Health professional
development event.
- Develop and disseminate a toolkit for schools to provide effective strategies to
ensure students receive 60 minutes of physical activity.
- Provide professional development and technical assistance to elementary and
middle schools on implementing and using fitness testing.
- Disseminate Wisconsin’s Model Academic Standards for Physical Education to all
K–12 physical education teachers.
Nutrition
Wisconsin is seeking to increase the percentage of schools in
which the lead health education teacher received professional development on nutrition
education and dietary behavior during the past 2 years.
Activities
- Promote and implement workshops focused on skill-based instruction and assessment
using Building Skills for Health Literacy.
- Conduct professional development experiences on the Wisconsin Nutrition Education
Standards for educators.
- Provide follow-up technical assistance to professional development participants
to aid with implementation of workshop topics.
Tobacco
Wisconsin is seeking to increase the percentage of schools
in which the lead health education teacher received professional development on tobacco-use
prevention education during the past 2 years.
Activities
- Promote and implement workshops focused on skill-based instruction and
assessment using the Building Skills for Health Literacy: Tobacco Use Prevention
resource.
- Conduct three share shops/workshops for schools, coalitions, and state partners
to develop relationships, improve technical assistance, and foster collaboration on
local tobacco prevention and control efforts.
- Provide technical assistance and consultation for local tobacco coalitions to
better involve youth in leadership and advocacy for tobacco prevention.
