HIV, STD, and Unintended Pregnancy Prevention |
South Carolina is seeking to increase the percentage of
schools that address all of the following in a required course taught during grades
9, 10, 11, or 12:
- The relationship among HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- The relationship between alcohol and other drug use and risk for HIV, other STDs,
and pregnancy.
- The benefits of being sexually abstinent.
- How to prevent HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- How to access valid and reliable health information, products, and services related
to HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- The influences of media, family, and social and cultural norms on sexual behavior.
- Communication and negotiation skills related to eliminating or reducing risk for
HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- Goal setting and decision making skills related to eliminating or reducing risk for
HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
Activities
- Collaborate with the State Alliance for Adolescent Sexual Health to promote
the implementation of evidence-based HIV prevention programs.
- Collaborate with the South Carolina Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy to
provide training and technical assistance on implementing the Tool to Assess
the Characteristics of Effective STD and HIV Education (TAC) for at least five local
school districts that serve populations disproportionately affected by HIV, STDs, and
teen pregnancy.
- Maintain a cadre of trainers that can assist local school districts and
schools in implementing effective evidence-based HIV prevention programs, policies,
and practices.
- Provide resources, training, and funding to implement evidence-based HIV
prevention programs in at least five local school districts that serve populations
disproportionately affected by HIV, STDs, and teen pregnancy.

- Efficacy of condoms, that is, how well condoms work and do not work.
- The importance of using condoms consistently and correctly.
- How to correctly use a condom.
Activities
- Coordinate an online course on HIV prevention educational strategies,
including condom use, and offer instruction to all health teachers in at least five
local school districts that serve populations disproportionately affected by HIV, STI,
and teen pregnancy.
South Carolina is seeking to increase the percentage of schools
that have a policy or policies that address all of the following issues:
- Attendance of students with HIV infection.
- Procedures to protect HIV-infected students and staff from discrimination.
- Maintaining confidentiality of HIV-infected students and staff.
Activities
- Collaborate with the South Carolina School Boards Association to provide
resources and technical assistance to promote the adoption and implementation
of model HIV policies to at least five local school districts.
