Chicago Public Schools receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to

  • Conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey.
  • Implement effective policies, programs, and practices to avoid, prevent, and reduce sexual risk behaviors among students that contribute to HIV infection, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and pregnancy.
  • Implement effective policies, programs, and practices to prevent and reduce asthma episodes and absences among students with asthma.

HIV, STD, and Unintended Pregnancy Prevention

Chicago is seeking to increase the percentage of schools that deliver HIV, STD, or pregnancy prevention programs (including after school or supplemental programs) that meet the needs of ethnic/racial minority youth at high risk (e.g., black, Hispanic, or American Indian youth) by doing all of the following:

  • Providing curricula or supplementary materials that include pictures, information, and learning experiences that reflect the life experiences of these youth in their communities.
  • Providing curricula or supplementary materials in the primary languages of the youth and families.
  • Facilitating access to direct health services or arrangements with providers not on school property who have experience in serving these youth in the community.
  • Facilitating access to direct social services and psychological services or arrangements with providers not on school property who have experience in serving these youth in the community.
  • Requiring professional development for school staff on HIV, STD, and pregnancy prevention issues and resources for these youth.
Activities
  • Identify school support team representatives in targeted high-need schools, including community-based organizations, school personnel, and parents.
  • Collaborate with community-based organizations to ensure implementation of comprehensive sexual health education programs in targeted high-need schools.
  • Develop a community-based organization service matrix for targeted high-need schools and assist schools in linking with these approved community-based organizations.
  • Identify high schools in targeted high risk areas to participate in the Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) Education and Screening Project who will receive education on STIs and new social media resources.


Chicago is seeking to increase the percentage of schools that provide parents and families health information to increase parent and family knowledge of HIV prevention, STD prevention, and teen pregnancy prevention.

Activities

  • Disseminate student health risk data fact sheets to parents, communities, and other stakeholders.
  • Launch a Web site with comprehensive sexual health education information and resources for teachers, parents, and students.
  • Provide presentations on family life and comprehensive sexual health education to local school councils in targeted schools.


Chicago is seeking to increase the percentage of schools in which the lead health education teacher received professional development during the past 2 years on all of the following:

  • Describing how widespread HIV and other STD infections are and the consequences of these infections.
  • Understanding the modes of transmission and effective prevention strategies for HIV and other STDs.
  • Identifying populations of youth who are at high risk of being infected with HIV and other STDs.
  • Implementing health education strategies using prevention messages that are likely to be effective in reaching youth.
Activities
  • Provide Family Life and Comprehensive Sexual Health Education training to teachers in the targeted schools.
  • Link community-based organizations with targeted schools to implement comprehensive sexual health education programs.
  • Provide technical assistance and follow-up support to aid with Family Life and Comprehensive Sexual Health Education program implementation.

Asthma Management

Chicago is seeking to increase the percentage of schools that have on file an asthma action plan for all students with known asthma.

Activities
  • Disseminate updated medication (focus on asthma and allergy) and food allergy policies through online trainings, distribution of educational materials, in-person trainings, administrative memos, and asthma posters throughout the district.
  • Provide information about medication and food allergy policies at all professional development events and education sessions for school clinicians and staff.
  • Provide information about medication and food allergy policies at asthma education and management sessions to students with asthma and their parents at identified high-risk schools.
  • Improve district-wide dissemination of new and existing asthma and allergy policies, information, and resources through a Web site for staff, students, and families.


Chicago is seeking to increase the percentage of schools that implement a policy permitting students to carry and self-administer asthma medications in both of the following ways:

  • Communicate the policy to students, parents, and families.
  • Designate an individual responsible for implementing the policy.
Activities
  • Disseminate updated medication and food allergy policies through online trainings, distribution of educational materials, in-person trainings, administrative memos, and asthma posters throughout the district.
  • Provide information about medication and food allergy policies at all professional development events and education sessions for school clinicians and staff.
  • Provide information about medication and food allergy policies at asthma education and management sessions to students with asthma and their parents at identified high-risk schools.
  • Improve district-wide dissemination of new and existing asthma and allergy policies, information, and resources through a Web site for staff, students, and families.


Chicago is seeking to increase the percentage of schools requiring that all school staff members receive training on recognizing and responding to severe asthma symptoms that require immediate action, as a part of annual staff development.

Activities

  • Conduct district-wide asthma management education sessions for social workers, psychologists, and occupational therapists working in schools.
  • Conduct district-wide asthma management education sessions for physical education teachers and coaches.
  • Development and implementation of Environmental Online Module for all district staff specifically targeting building engineers, custodians, administrators and teachers.
  • Build asthma education and resources into multiple outreach opportunities and professional development offered by the coordinated school health and clinical departments.
