Past Program Activities, 2003–2008
Michigan, 2003–2008
From March 2003–February 2008, Michigan received funding from CDC’s
Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school
health, promote sun safety, provide HIV prevention education, support
partnerships and collaboration around helping youth remain abstinent, and
conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).For information on Michigan's

Past Program Activities
Promoted Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco
Use Prevention (PANT)
- Maintained the Healthy School Network to expand collaboration
across multiple state agencies to address physical activity, nutrition,
and tobacco use prevention among school-age youth.
- Facilitated efforts by the state-level coordinated school health (CSH)
team advisory council to support state, regional, and local CSH
activities and disseminate successful CSH case studies through a variety
of channels.
- Provided technical assistance and professional development for
health leaders and health advocates to improve their abilities to
educate a variety of audiences on the link between school health and
academic achievement.
Provided HIV
Prevention Education
- Collaborated with the Michigan Public Health Institute to provide
leadership on the Moving Forward Together forums, which are
designed to increase communication and collaboration with diverse
stakeholders.
- Provided training and technical assistance to members of local district sex
education advisory boards and school policy makers to increase
knowledge and skills in adopting and implementing research-based HIV/STD
and sexuality education curricula that comply with Michigan’s HIV and
sex education laws and align with state board of education policy.
- Conducted a variety of workshops on topics related to HIV
prevention, including workshops for parents on how to build parent-school
collaboration to support effective HIV education at home and at school,
workshops for educators on adopting and implementing HIV/STD and
sexuality education programs that are consistent with existing state and local
policy, workshops for local advisory committee members on effective
HIV/STD education program planning, and workshops for educators on
creating safer school environments for sexual minority youth.
- Provided professional development to teachers and community
partners to improve their ability to reach students in high-risk
situations, including youth of color, sexual minority youth, youth with
special needs, homeless and runaway youth, and adjudicated youth.
Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Collaborated with the Michigan Department of Community Health,
Detroit Public Schools, and Michigan Inter-Tribal Council to administer
the Michigan YRBS.
- Provided guidance to professional preparation programs on the use
of YRBS data to help develop policies and programs in K−12 education.
- Provided and disseminated results of the Michigan YRBS to
statewide health education groups and the general public during presentations related to
coordinated school health.
