Past Program Activities, 2003–2008
Iowa, 2003–2008

From March 2003–February 2008, Iowa received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

Past Program Activities

Provided HIV Prevention Education

  • Provided professional development for HIV educators on research-based HIV prevention curricula and activities that can be used in an effective HIV prevention curriculum.
     
  • Worked with master trainers to deliver HIV prevention education to all youth, including youth in juvenile detention facilities.
     
  • Cosponsored the HIV Prevention and Care Conference with the Iowa Department of Public Health and the Regional HIV/STD and Sexuality Conference with Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska.

Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Collected data that are representative of youth in grades 9 −12 across the state.
     
  • Distributed survey results from the YRBS to statewide agencies, schools, local school administrators, the state Community Planning Group, and other agencies working with youth.
     
  • Used YRBS data to prepare state publications, develop a prevention curriculum for use in local school districts, and improve programs and policies.
