State Agencies Vermont
The
Vermont Department of Education receives funding from CDC’s Division of
Adolescent & School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct
the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The Department is working to improve
the health of Vermont’s school-aged children through policy changes,
creation of school health teams, provision of professional development
opportunities, and collaboration with other state agencies.
Vermont's Program In Action
Providing HIV
Prevention Education
- Collaborating with youth-serving agencies to build the capacity of
teachers to provide up-to-date, accurate, evidence-based HIV, STD and
pregnancy prevention education.
- Providing capacity building assistance to increase health educators’
comfort level with subject matters related to HIV, STD and pregnancy
prevention and to create a climate conducive to learning.
- Engaging youth groups in the YRBS Student Analysis Project to
examine the data on high risk behaviors related to HIV, STD, and
pregnancy prevention; and engaging community members in dialogue to
address the issues.
Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Providing an in-depth analysis of YRBS data on sub-group populations
at high risk for health disparities.
- Disseminating YRBS data to schools, health agencies, partners,
decision-makers, and on the Vermont Department of Health Web site.
- Encouraging alternative school settings, the juvenile justice system
and youth-based social service organizations to collect YRBS data to
plan interventions to reach high risk youth.
