Healthy KidsVirginia receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The goal of the Virginia Department of Education HIV prevention education program is to increase the availability, quality, and effectiveness of programs designed to promote Family Life Education and prevent HIV infection, other STDs, and unintended teenage pregnancy, especially among youth who are at high risk.

Virginia's Program In Action

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Providing Family Life Education workshops for district and school staff, school nurses, and School Health Advisory Board members.
     
  • Forging two new partnerships within the Department of Education to provide guidance and resources related to populations at risk for dropping out of school, and those students who may be homeless.
     
  • Researching, designing and implementing an annual survey of Family Life Education programs in all 132 school divisions.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS in Virginia high schools, through a collaborative effort between Virginia’s Department of Health and Department of Education to obtain data representative of students in grades 9-12.
     
  • Developing a YRBS Webpage to disseminate YRBS planning and implementation activities.
