Healthy KidsThe Maine Department of Education receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The Department partners with the Maine Department of Health and Human Services Center for Disease Control and Prevention to provide resources, technical assistance, and professional development for school staff.

Maine's Program In Action

Promoting Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Increasing the collaboration and coordination among State and non-governmental agencies to support implementation of CSH and promotion of physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco-use prevention programs for youth.

  • Providing capacity building sessions and technical assistance to local education associations and school health coordinators on model programs and promising practices.

  • Educating decision makers and funders about the cost effectiveness of investing in prevention, specifically the benefits of a comprehensive and coordinated approach to improving youth health and education.

  • Producing and disseminating new tools for state, local, and tribal partners to promote CSHP and PANT statewide.

  • Providing culturally appropriate training and technical assistance to local education agency administrators and tribal leaders to enhance the knowledge, skills, and leadership capacity needed to implement CSH and prevent chronic diseases related to physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco-use.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Working with teachers to increase knowledge and confidence and to improve classroom teaching for HIV prevention education.

  • Providing capacity building and technical assistance to superintendents, school health coordinators, and middle and high school teachers to examine trend data and implement policies and programs related to HIV, STD, and unwanted pregnancy for youth at disproportionate risk.

  • Collaborating with state and local partners to evaluate the use of science-based, medically accurate HIV education programs in schools.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Implementing Maine’s Integrated Youth Health Survey which includes the YRBS and the Maine Youth Alcohol and Drug Use Survey.

  • Preparing and issuing technical and summary reports, including comparisons to national data, tests of statistical significance, and trend analysis.
