Maryland's Program In Action

Providing HIV Prevention Education

• Providing professional development on using the Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum (VSC) in Health Education which incorporates the National Health Education Standards and provides a framework for curriculum development, instruction, and assessment of student knowledge and performance.
   
• Expanding HIV prevention efforts to reach student services staff, including school-based health center staff, school health services staff, counselors, psychologists, and social workers.
   
• Collaborating with the Maryland Leadership Workshop to increase youth involvement in HIV prevention efforts through leadership training and outreach.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

• Administering the YRBS to collect data on youth risk behaviors that are representative of Maryland students in grades 9-12.
   
• Disseminating YRBS results to school districts, the Maryland State School Health Council, and other key stakeholders through printed reports and oral presentations.
   
• Encouraging stakeholders to use the YRBS and School Health Profiles data for program planning and improvement.
