Healthy KidsCharlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) in North Carolina receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to implement an asthma management program and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The CMS asthma prevention program is a collaboration of schools, the local health department, city governmental agencies, hospitals, and professional organizations that work together to improve the health and academic success of Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s children by preventing asthma through a coordinated school health model.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg's Program In Action

Asthma Management

  • Providing technical assistance on asthma awareness and education to CMS middle and high school staff.
     
  • Providing targeted asthma education for elementary students with asthma to increase asthma knowledge and self-management skills.
     
  • Developing and maintaining an Asthma Action Plan for three-quarters of the CMS student population at high-risk for asthma.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS to collect health risk behavior data representative of CMS middle and high school students.
     
  • Developing culturally appropriate materials for use in educating and engaging the public about the YRBS results.
     
  • Convening discussion sessions with ten community groups regarding the YRBS results.
