The Hawaii Department of Education receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to

  • Conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey.
  • Implement effective policies, programs, and practices to avoid, prevent, and reduce sexual risk behaviors among students that contribute to HIV infection, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and pregnancy.

HIV, STD, and Unintended Pregnancy Prevention

Hawaii is seeking to increase the percentage of schools that provide parents and families health information to increase parent and family knowledge of HIV prevention, STD prevention, and teen pregnancy prevention.

Activities
  • Facilitate three professional development events to schools and families on HIV, STD, and teen pregnancy education that will reach 50 school staff and families within the community.
  • Promote and communicate the agency’s professional development, resources, and policy Web site to partners within the community through a variety of media channels.

Hawaii is seeking to increase the percentage of schools in which the lead health education teacher received professional development on at least six of the following during the past 2 years:

  • Teaching HIV prevention to students with physical, medical, or cognitive disabilities.
  • Teaching HIV prevention to students of various cultural backgrounds.
  • Using interactive teaching methods for HIV prevention education, such as role plays or cooperative group activities.
  • Teaching essential skills for health behavior change related to HIV prevention and guiding student practice of these skills.
  • Teaching about health-promoting social norms and beliefs related to HIV prevention.
  • Strategies for involving parents, families, and others in student learning of HIV prevention education.
  • Assessing students’ performance in HIV prevention education.
  • Implementing standards-based HIV prevention education curricula and student assessment.
  • Using technology to improve HIV prevention education instruction.
  • Teaching HIV prevention to students with limited English proficiency.
  • Addressing community concerns and challenges related to HIV prevention education.
Activities
  • Create a Web site that communicates upcoming professional development opportunities, including technology-based resources to assist secondary schools in providing HIV, STD, and teen pregnancy information.
  • Provide capacity-building and sustainability assistance to secondary schools to strengthen the continued implementation of HIV, STD, and teen pregnancy prevention curricula.
  • Develop and distribute training memos and credit course descriptions to schools and partners via e-mail and Web site communication to support professional development opportunities and provide follow-up support after events.
  • Market and distribute resources to secondary teachers who implement HIV, STD, and teen pregnancy prevention and provide opportunities to promote the sexual health needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and questioning youth.

Hawaii is seeking to increase the percentage of schools that have a policy or policies that address all of the following issues:

  • Attendance of students with HIV infection.
  • Procedures to protect HIV-infected students and staff from discrimination.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of HIV-infected students and staff.
Activities
  • Collaborate with internal and external agencies to collaborate on biannual meetings that focus on HIV, STD, and teen pregnancy prevention and Hawaii’s Department of Education Department of Education policies.
  • Promote and communicate the agency’s professional development, resources, and policy Web site to partners within the community through a variety of media channels.
