Funded Partners:
National Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs) National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE)
NASBE is the national private association representing all state and
territorial boards of education. Since 1987, NASBE has partnered with the
Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) to provide guidance and
assistance to state and local education policymakers and practitioners.
NASBE's
goal is to encourage safe, healthy, and nurturing school environments for
all of the nation's children and youth.
NASBE's Program in Action
NASBE is funded under two Capacity-Building Assistance
categories:
- Preventing HIV Infections: State and Local Education Agencies.
- Preventing Chronic Diseases: Increasing Healthy Eating.
For Preventing HIV Infections: State and Local Education Agencies, NASBE
is
- Providing capacity-building assistance to CDC/Division of
Adolescent and School Health (DASH)-funded state or local education
agencies that are NASBE members and have expressed a commitment to
pursue a guided HIV-related education policy and program improvement
initiative. This assistance also includes funds to SEA and LEA agencies on a competitive basis to help support their HIV prevention efforts.
- Providing HIV-related information and guidance to state boards of
education and other education stakeholders on policies that promote
effective HIV prevention for kindergarten through 12th grade students in
schools across the nation.
- Working with African American State Board Members to: 1)
educate board members and raise awareness about the HIV/AIDS crisis in
the African American Community; and 2) demonstrate the correlation
between health disparities, risk behaviors, and education disparities,
and the role of cultural competency.
- Maintaining and updating NASBE’s online state school health policy database, which contains state laws, regulations, and other policies on dozens of school health issues.
- Meeting with various NGOs and government agencies to plan and
coordinate capacity building assistance (CBA) activities.
Other NGOs funded under this category:

and coordinated school health teams to evaluate current nutrition policy and create
plans towards policy changes.

Eating" to attend a follow-up "Obesity Prevention Policy Symposium" in July 10–11, 2008 in
collaboration with NASBE's new obesity prevention project, funded by the Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation. Follow up capacity building assistance will be provided on an ongoing
basis.

school health to the nation’s state and local health and education agencies through
NASBE’s policy updates, issue briefs, and other written materials.
