Adolescent Health and
Academic Achievement Study (AHAA)
This study by the
Population Research Center at the University of Texas provides an opportunity to
examine the effects of education on adolescent behavior, academic
achievement, and cognitive and psychosocial development in the 1990s. The AHAA data provides indicators of 1) educational achievement, 2) course
taking patterns, 3) curricular exposure, and 4) educational contexts
within and between schools.
The Whole Child
The
Association for
Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD)
proposes a broader definition of achievement and accountability that
promotes the development of children who are healthy, safe, engaged,
supported, and challenged. ASCD recommends a new compact with our young
people, and asks local, state, and national policymakers to ensure
conditions that support comprehensive approaches to learning—for engaging
the whole child.
Making
the Connection: Health and Student Achievement
[ppt 5.7MB]
This PowerPoint presentation was developed by the
Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) and the
Society of State Directors of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (SSDHPER)
to provide information on how
Coordinated School Health Programs improve the health and education outcomes
of our nation’s youth. Making the Connection provides an overview of
research on the link between health status, health behavior, and academic
achievement in youth; describes the eight components of
Coordinated School Health; and demonstrates the impact of the components on
health, behavior, and student achievement.
Center for Safe and Healthy Schools
The goal of the Center for Safe and Healthy Schools, National Association of
State Boards of Education (NASBE) is to encourage safe, healthy, and
nurturing school environments for all of the nation's children and youth.
The Center helps to increase student achievement by providing policy
guidance, assistance, and resources to state and local education
policymakers and practitioners.
School Health Programs
The National School Boards Association (NSBA) recognizes the critical link
between health and learning and the role of schools in promoting life-long
health and preventing health risk behaviors. NSBA’s School Health Programs
department provides resources to state school boards associations to help
school policymakers and educators make informed decisions about health
issues affecting the academic achievement and healthy development of
students and the effective operation of schools.
