Avian Influenza Update: Djibouti

On May 12, 2006, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported the first confirmed human case of avian influenza A (H5N1) virus infection in Djibouti . The patient is a 2-year-old girl from a small rural village near the border with Somalia . She developed symptoms on April 23 and is presently in stable condition. Three of the child's siblings are also getting medical treatment and being evaluated for possible H5N1 infection. Health authorities in Djibouti began surveillance for human cases of avian influenza A (H5N1) after reports of a small number of chickens dying in early April.
