People with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) suffer from multiple symptoms including fatigue, problems with memory/concentration/sleep, and musculoskeletal pain. CFS does not have a proven infectious etiology, but infection with Mycoplasma has been proposed. To test this, we used a sensitive and specific amplification assay to test cell-free plasma DNA from persons with CFS and non-fatigued controls for Mycoplasma. We found no evidence of Mycoplasma DNA in either the CFS or non-fatigued subjects. Independent replication of this study and those that have identified Mycoplasma will resolve whether any Mycoplasma species are causally associated with CFS.
