Slide 32 — How Can I Decide Whether to Screen My Patients?

Talking Points

Most medical organizations have a common recommendation for clinicians about how to handle this decision.

Even though these organizations—like individual patients—vary in how they weigh the importance of pros and cons of prostate cancer screening, there is general agreement on two aspects:

  1. Men need to know about these issues and the uncertainties in evidence to make informed choices.
  2. Clinicians should handle the decision by:
    • Educating patients about the pros and cons of PSA screening and then adding another step.
    • Using shared decision making to help patients decide what is best for them.

Sources: Access medical organizations' screening and shared decision-making recommendations in the Screening for Prostate Cancer Toolkit; Barry, 2002.
