Slide 15 — Key Issues of Screening and Early Treatment

Talking Points

For the next several slides, we'll look at evidence regarding three key questions that address whether there is value in screening:

  • Does screening extend men's lives (are there benefits)?
  • Does screening lead to health problems (are there harms)?
  • Do the benefits outweigh the harms?

The best evidence for examining the benefits and harms of screening comes from controlled clinical trials that randomize men to screening or no screening, then follow them over several years to look for differences in mortality and quality of life.

Two randomized controlled trials are now underway, but it will be several years before they are complete. In the meantime, we'll look at other evidence that can help us decide about the benefits and harms of screening.
