Slide 8 — Risk of Death from Prostate Cancer by Age and Race/EthnicityTalking PointsThis table illustrates the risk of dying of prostate cancer during the following 15 years, for men at age 50 and for men at age 65 for several racial and ethnic groups. The numbers indicate the number of men out of 1,000 who will die of prostate cancer during that time period. For example, in the first (orange) row, among 1,000 men of all racial and ethnic groups at age 50, two die of prostate cancer before reaching age 65. Note that the risk of dying from prostate cancer increases with age. For all 65-year-old U.S. men, 16 out of 1,000 die of prostate cancer during the next 15 years. The table also shows that mortality risk varies with race/ethnicity. For example, for men at age 50, five African-American men per 1,000 die of prostate cancer in the next 15 years, in contrast to one man of Asian/Pacific Islander descent. Among racial groups, African-American men have the highest risk of dying from prostate cancer and their increased risk begins at earlier ages.
