Registry Data Contribute to Community Discussion of Coal Mine Project
Alaska Cancer Registry
In response to public concerns, the Alaska Cancer Registry (ACR) provided data for a study related to industrial and environmental contaminants to determine whether cancer incidence rates were statistically significant higher.
Many industrial and environmental contaminants have been associated with cancer incidence. ACR data were used to conduct studies in a community where a coal mine project is proposed. Residents wanted information on the cancer statistics in the existing coal mining community.
Study results were shared with community residents. While the results did not demonstrate a statistically significant increased rate of cancer, ongoing public testimony opposes opening a coal mining operation in the Matanuska Susitna area, and this project has been on hold for five years.
The ACR is a vital resource of cancer information for Alaska. Using the most current ACR data to respond to community concerns while increasing the knowledge about the effectiveness of cancer diagnostic and treatment regimens puts these valuable data to work where they can be most effective.
