Comprehensive Cancer Control Presentation Uses County-Level Data
South Carolina Central Cancer Registry
The South Carolina Central Cancer Registry (SCCCR) collaborated with comprehensive cancer control staff and a regional health educator to present cancer data to the community. The presentation included risk factors, lifestyle and behavior information from CDC's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, and health department resources available including breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening.
ZIP Code data analyses were presented for the entire county to illustrate potential areas of excess, and county cancer rates were compared to state rates for all cancers combined and for specific sites. The most recent five-year incidence and mortality data were used. A local cable television station recorded the event and replayed it during the following month to reach a wider audience.
The SCCCR organized the presentation, inviting comprehensive cancer control and local health department participation. This effort can be replicated across the state (and in other states), bringing the data back to the communities along with helpful resource information and lifestyle behavior recommendations to decrease their risk for developing or dying from cancer.
