Web-Based Training to Improve Data Quality
Georgia Comprehensive Cancer Registry
As the cancer data set expands and rules change, ongoing training is needed to improve coding uniformity and ensure adherence to the rules. A Web training tool provides timely feedback to registrars on their abstracting quality, and helps train abstractors throughout Georgia with no cost to the employer.
After each year’s series is complete, all cases are posted for abstracting practice with the final answers. A conference call explains the answers and gives participants an opportunity to ask questions. Registry managers can use the exercises in training or new abstractors can practice on their own.
Web training is now focused on Collaborative Stage version 2 rules and changes. The current series includes three cases: two for abstracting and one that abstractors code from submitted text, which highlights the importance of text documentation.
Participation in case abstracting and in the conference call after the final answers are posted has increased steadily over time.
The tool can be changed as rules and required fields change, providing abstractors with cases and feedback for current coding. The abstracts submitted to the central registry will be of better quality as abstractors understand the new requirements.
