Improving Race Data Quality
Ohio Cancer Incidence Surveillance System
While the Ohio Cancer Incidence Surveillance System (OCISS) has managed to maintain data of good quality, it has struggled to meet and maintain all standards every year. This year, the OCISS improved its ability to meet national standards consistently for data completeness, timeliness, and quality by focusing on collecting more complete race data.
The registry linked its data with the Ohio Department of Health's Medicaid Data Base and Vital Statistics Birth Records to obtain missing race data. We plan to do this every year. The linkages resulted in the OCISS exceeding national standards for the completeness of Ohio's race data for the 2007 data submission to CDC and the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR).
The hard work paid off as the Ohio data met all of the National Program of Cancer Registries' standards for data completeness, timeliness, and quality for its data submission this year, and is expected to receive NAACCR's gold certification for only the second time in its history.
