Trends in Suicide Rates* Among Persons Ages 25–64 Years, Both Sexes, by Age Group, United States, 1991–2009
Since 1999, the suicide rate among persons ages 45 to 54 years has continued to rise, and since 2001, the highest rates have been seen in this age group. In 2009, the suicide rate in this age group was 19.16 per 100,000, up 37.9% from 1999 when the rate was 13.89 per 100,000. In the same time period, the rate in the 55 to 64 year age group rose 34.6%, from 12.18 to 16.40 per 100,000. The rates among 25 to 34 and 35 to 44 year olds have increased more slowly, rising only 2.8% and 12.2%, respectively between 1999 and 2009.
