Trends in Suicide Rates* Among Females, by Age Group, United States, 1991–2009

Suicide rates in females 25 to 64 years increased from 5.75 suicides per 100,000 in 2000 to 7.35 suicides per 100,000 in 2009. Suicide rates among females ages 65 years and older decreased from 5.94 deaths per 100,000 in 1991 to 4.04 per 100,000 in 2009. Suicide rates generally declined among females ages 10 to 24 years from 1991 to 2003 followed by an increase from 2.16 suicides per 100,000 in 2003 to 2.65 suicides per 100,000 in 2004 (previously reported, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 56:905–08.) Then suicide rates among females ages 10 to 24 years declined from 2004 to 2007 followed by a 21.1% increase seen between 2007 and 2009, when the rate rose from 2.28 to 2.76.
