Evaluation of the Placement of Mobile Fruit and Vegetable Vendors to Alleviate Food Deserts in New York City

The Green Cart target areas are shown in the boroughs of Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn. The Green Cart location sites show that only a few throughout the city are in food deserts (areas with no healthy food stores within one-quarter mile). The candidate locations show a substantial number of sites in food deserts in all boroughs except Manhattan.

Figure. Green Cart (panel A) and candidate locations (panel B) shown by food environment within a quarter-mile street network distance, New York City. Cart locations were obtained from New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, updated through 2013. Food store locations identified with ArcInfo Business Analyst 2012 (Esri) were verified via Google Street View.
