State Agencies West Virginia
West
Virginia currently receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and
School Health to promote coordinated school health, prevent HIV infection,
and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). West Virginia’s
Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) is a collaborative effort between
the West Virginia Department of Education and West Virginia Bureau of Public
Health. The mission of West Virginia’s Office of Healthy Schools is to
provide leadership, training, and support for schools and their communities
to improve collaboration and ensure the health and educational achievement
of children in a safe, nurturing, and disciplined environment.

Promoting Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco
Use Prevention (PANT)
- Coordinating state-level data collection activities and establishing
on-going processes for selecting samples, collecting data, interpreting
results, and sharing data.
- Collaborating with the West Virginia Bureau of Public Health, the Governor’s
Healthy Lifestyle Committee, the Governor, and the Legislature to
establish a state plan for CSHP/PANT.
- Providing technical assistance to all 55 LEA school wellness
councils to increase their capacity to implement specific, effective
CSHP/PANT policies and practices designed to attain performance
measures.
- Collaborating with various partners to conduct professional
development activities that promote the implementation of CDC’s School
Health Guidelines for a minimum of 800 school officials and others
responsible for establishing CSHP/PANT that adhere to the Six Strategies
for Improving School Health Programs by Strengthening Professional
Development.
Providing HIV
Prevention Education
- Collaborating with the West Virginia Bureau of Public Health to link
workplans and logic models to establish a joint state plan for HIV.
- Providing school health-specific information and research to the
Governor’s Office, Legislature, and State Board of Education for the
purpose of keeping school health policies relevant and useful, as well
as making suggestions for additional policy development.
- Providing technical assistance to all 55 local education agencies to
increase their capacity to implement effective HIV prevention education
policies and practices.
Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Administering the YRBS in coordination with the Youth Tobacco Survey
to collect health risk behavior data representative of West Virginia
students in grades 9–12.
- Developing reports and presentations to summarize the results of the
YRBS.
- Collaborating with the WV Bureau of Public Health and the West Virginia
Prevention Research Center to disseminate the results of the YRBS on the
Web site.
