HIV, STD, and Unintended Pregnancy Prevention |
The Marshall Islands Ministry of Education is seeking to
increase the percentage of schools that address all of the following in a required course
taught during grades 6, 7, or 8:
- The differences between HIV and AIDS.
- How HIV and other STDs are transmitted.
- How HIV and other STDs are diagnosed and treated.
- Health consequences of HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- The benefits of being sexually abstinent.
- How to prevent HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- How to access valid and reliable health information, products, and services
related to HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- The influences of media, family, and social and cultural norms on sexual behavior.
- Communication and negotiation skills related to eliminating or reducing risk for
HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- Goal setting and decision making skills related to eliminating or reducing risk
for HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- Compassion for persons living with HIV or AIDS.
Activities
- Provide professional development opportunities for school health educators
on implementing evidence-based HIV, STD, and pregnancy prevention curricula.
- Establish sex education standards and benchmarks.
- Collaborate with the Rocky Mountain Center to provide professional development
opportunities for school health educators on evaluation strategies.
- Provide culturally appropriate HIV, STD, and pregnancy prevention curricula to middle
school students.

that have a policy or policies that address all of the following issues:
- Attendance of students with HIV infection.
- Procedures to protect HIV-infected students and staff from discrimination.
- Maintaining confidentiality of HIV-infected students and staff.
Activities
- Review and revise HIV policy in accordance with CDC guidelines.
- Provide health resources and supplementary materials to schools to assist in the
implementation of the HIV policy components.
- Provide technical assistance to health teachers on the HIV policy components
and implementation strategies.
