HIV, STD, and Unintended Pregnancy Prevention |
Guam is seeking to increase the percentage of
schools that address all of the following in a required course taught during
grades 6, 7, or 8:
- The differences between HIV and AIDS.
- How HIV and other STDs are transmitted.
- How HIV and other STDs are diagnosed and treated.
- Health consequences of HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- The benefits of being sexually abstinent.
- How to prevent HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- How to access valid and reliable health information, products, and services related to HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- The influences of media, family, and social and cultural norms on sexual behavior.
- Communication and negotiation skills related to eliminating or reducing risk for HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- Goal setting and decision making skills related to eliminating or reducing risk for HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- Compassion for persons living with HIV or AIDS.
Activities
- Provide evidence-based curriculum and accompanying resources to all middle school health education teachers.
- Provide up-to-date HIV/AIDS, STD, and unintended pregnancy community resources, books, videos, and posters to all middle school health education teachers.
- Implement a checklist with all middle school health education teachers to assess instructional compliance within the HIV/AIDS curriculum.

Guam is seeking to increase the percentage of schools in which students’ family or community members have helped develop or implement HIV prevention, STD prevention, or teen pregnancy prevention policies and programs:
Activities
- Initiate collaborative partnerships with community-based organizations to improve the delivery of HIV prevention education in schools.
- Invite community-based organization, parents, and other community partners to attend the annual HIV/AIDS Prevention Conference.
- Provide HIV/AIDS prevention education updates and training opportunities at 10 parent/teacher meetings.
- Coordinate HIV/AIDS prevention policies and strategies with all stakeholders.

Guam is seeking to increase the percentage of schools that have a policy or policies that address all of the following issues:
- Attendance of students with HIV infection.
- Procedures to protect HIV-infected students and staff from discrimination.
- Maintaining confidentiality of HIV-infected students and staff.
Activities
- Develop and implement written policies for students diagnosed as HIV-positive, having AIDS, or having an STD.
- Gather policy information on HIV, STD, and unintended pregnancy interventions and develop a process to measure the efficacy of these policies.
- Provide professional development and technical assistance to all instructional school staff on the new HIV policy, enforcement strategies, and implementation.
