- Conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey.

Kentucky is seeking to increase the percentage of schools
that provide parents and families health information to increase parent and family
knowledge of HIV, STD, and teen pregnancy prevention.
Activities
- Provide medically accurate HIV prevention information to school Family Resource Youth Service Centers to share with families.
- Develop a resource for schools on family and community involvement in HIV programs and policies.
- Leverage the reach of the North Central Area Health Education Center’s use of
health promotores (promoters) to provide information on preventing HIV, STD, and
unintended pregnancy to a minimum of 100 Hispanic youth and parents.

Kentucky is seeking to increase the percentage of schools
in which the lead health education teacher received professional development during the
past two years on all of the following:
- Describing how widespread HIV and other STD infections are and the consequences
of these infections.
- Understanding the modes of transmission and effective prevention strategies
for HIV and other STDs.
- Identifying populations of youth who are at high risk of being infected with
HIV and other STDs.
- Implementing health education strategies using prevention messages that are
likely to be effective in reaching youth.
Activities
- Provide professional development to at least 75 teachers on HIV prevention, teaching strategies, and the newly implemented Practical Living/Career Studies Program Review.
- Provide professional development to 50 middle and high school teachers on evidence-based curricula for HIV and teen pregnancy prevention.
- Maintain strong partnerships with district health coordinators, the Division of Program Standards at the Kentucky Department of Education, and the Health Education
Assessment Project to provide resources to health teachers.

Physical Activity
Kentucky is seeking to increase the percentage of schools that
offer intramural activities or physical activity clubs for all students, including
those with disabilities.
Activities
- Partner with the Kentucky Out of School Alliance to develop and distribute at least two resources for schools on creating physical activity clubs and intramurals for students.

Nutrition
Kentucky is seeking to increase the percentage of schools
in which the lead health education teacher received professional development on

Activities

teachers on nutrition education, how to use the National Health Education Standards,
and resources for student assessment.
- Provide professional development to a minimum of 100 teachers on the new Practical Living/Career Studies Program Review that will include nutrition education.

Tobacco
Kentucky is seeking to increase the percentage of schools that
follow a policy that mandates a tobacco-free environment. A tobacco-free environment is
one that prohibits tobacco use by students, staff, and visitors in school buildings,
at school functions, in school vehicles, on school grounds, and at off-site school
events, applicable 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.
Activities
- Leverage partnerships to assist at least 10 schools in the implementation of 24/7 tobacco-free school campuses through skills-building meetings and follow-up support.

Coordinated School Health |
Kentucky is seeking to increase the percentage of schools
that have a group (e.g., school health team) that helps plan and implement school
health programs, with representation from 10 or more of the following:
- School administrators.
- Health education teachers.
- Physical education teachers.
- Mental health or social services staff.
- Nutrition or food service staff.
- Health services staff (e.g., school nurse).
- Maintenance and transportation staff.
- Student body.
- Parents or families of students.
- Community.
- Local health departments, agencies, or organizations.
- Faith-based organizations.
- Businesses.
- Local government.
Activities
- Provide professional development for at least 80 district health coordinators to assist
them in expanding a well-coordinated school health system, including a school
health team.
- Develop a Coordinated School Health 101 online training that includes
information about developing a representative group, such as a school health
team, to help plan and implement school health programs.
- Plan the Safe and Healthy School Conference with the Kentucky School Board Association.

or environments in physical activity or nutrition using the Students Taking
