Chronic Disease: Promoting Coordinated School Health
NSBA, whose mission is to foster excellence and equity in public education through school board leadership, is committed to helping school policymakers make informed decisions about health issues affecting the academic achievement and healthy development of students and the effective operation of schools.
NSBA's Program in Action
NSBA is funded under two Capacity-Building Assistance categories:
- Preventing Chronic Diseases: Preventing Initiation and Reducing Tobacco Use.
- Preventing Chronic Diseases: Promoting Coordinated School Health Programs (CSHPs).
For Preventing Chronic Diseases: Preventing Initiation and Reducing Tobacco Use, NSBA is
- Convening the 4th annual in-person meeting of the National Consortium on Tobacco Use Prevention through Schools, comprised of national organizations with state level affiliates along with state school boards association representatives, working to implement joint strategies for preventing youth tobacco use and strengthening tobacco-free schools policies in collaboration with tobacco use prevention advocates and state school boards in states.
- Promoting the National Consortium on Tobacco Use Prevention through Schools Website focused on promoting comprehensive tobacco-free school policies, resources to help advance these policies and links to organizations working in the field of tobacco-free schools.
- Targeting technical assistance, information, and resources to school boards, school leaders, and state education agencies (SEAs) to help establish and strengthen policies and practices to support tobacco-free schools and prevent tobacco use by youth.
- Highlighting (via website) local school district “best practices” that effectively support policies and practices for preventing tobacco use and establishing tobacco-free schools.
- Developing and disseminating strategies for school boards to engage parent and families in school health-related policy and practice decisions in partnership with parent and family involvement organizations.
- Assessing model or sample policies of state school board associations for alignment with established tobacco policy recommendations and standards.
For Preventing Chronic Diseases: Promoting Coordinated School Health Programs (CSHPs), NSBA is
- Using a variety of communication and professional development activities to promote and disseminate Coordinated School Health policy information and guidance to state education agencies (SEAs) and local education agencies (LEAs) for addressing health issues. Activities include developing “101” packets on select school health topics and distribution of a bimonthly e-newsletter Health Link.
- Increasing the participation of local school administrators and school boards in implementing practices that support a coordinated and integrated approach for schools in address health issues.
- Promoting the “Promising District Practices” website focused on providing local school boards access to success stories and effective practices to address priority health issues through a CSH framework.
- Developing and disseminating model CSH policies and fact sheets to build district- and state-level capacity to adopt CSH policies.
- Partnering with parent and family involvement organizations to engage parents and family members in school health policy and practice decisions.
- Partnering with the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network and the National Association of School Nurses to develop and disseminate policy guidance on the management of food allergy and anaphylaxis in schools.
