American Psychological Association (APA)

American Psychological Association (APA) advances psychology as a science, a profession, and a means of promoting health, education, and human welfare. APA's 150,000 members constitute the largest scientific and professional association of psychologists worldwide. With CDC funding, the APA is implementing the Healthy Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Students Project.

APA's Program in Action

APA is funded to provide Capacity-Building Assistance for Preventing HIV Infections: Organizations that Serve Young Men Who have Sex with Men, especially African American and Latino Males.

  • Delivering full-day, newly updated, research-based professional development workshops for school pupil services personnel including counselors, nurses, psychologists, and social workers on how to promote healthy behaviors among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and questioning (LGBQ) students, particularly young men of color. The workshops are conducted by a cadre of experienced trainers and provided in partnership with state education agencies, school districts, and community-based organizations.
  • Developing and maintaining a cadre of professional development trainers who provide capacity-building assistance to DASH-funded partners.
  • Providing multifaceted, client-driven capacity building assistance to DASH-funded partners on establishing ongoing professional development programs for school staff on preventing HIV and other STIs among LGBQ students.
  • Linking schools with community-based organizations that serve young men who have sex with men, including those with a focus on African-American and Latino men, in order to reduce disproportionately high rates of HIV among those demographic groups.
