Coordinated School Health Programs and Academic Achievement:
A Systematic Review of the Literature
[pdf 279K]
Paper by Murray, Low, Cross, Davis, Hollis, Adetunji (Journal
of School Health, November 2007). This report examines how school
health program interventions that fit within the eight Coordinated
School Health Program (CSHP) components improve academic success among
students. The authors conclude that school health
programs hold promise for improving academic outcomes for students.
Research Review: School-based Health Interventions and Academic Achievement
[pdf 2.1M]
Analyzes data from Washington’s 2006 Healthy Youth Survey. The report looks
at 13 health risk factors and cross-references them with self-reported
grades, lists evidence-based health interventions that can improve academic
performance; and makes a strong case for addressing the school environment,
instruction, and supportive services.
Physical
Education and
Academic Achievement in Elementary School: Data from the Early Childhood
Longitudinal Study
Paper by Carlson, Fulton, Lee, Maynard, Brown, Kohl,
and Dietz (American Journal of Public Health). This study examined the association between time
spend in physical education and academic achievement in a longitudinal study
of students in kindergarten through fifth grade. A small but significant
benefit for academic achievement in mathematics and reading was observed for
girls enrolled in higher amounts (70–300 min/wk) of physical education
(referent: 0–35 min/wk). Higher amounts of physical education were not
positively or negatively associated with academic achievement in boys.
